How to behave with aging parents?

With aging parents, you see typical conversations like: Sit down. Let me tell you all what happened today. Or: I am worried. Did I offend the person with what I said? Can you please assure me I said ok in that conversation? Or: Can you help me and teach me to use this app? I also want to use it.

It is beautiful and emotional to witness parents in this vulnerable state. It bonds the relationship and creates lots of unforgettable moments.

Well, according to the question: How to behave with aging parents, there are lots of intakes and insights I learned from the recites of the Holy Book of Quran. One is: “And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy” in Surat Al Isra’a, Aya 24. This is where Allah advises us to calm down, go down to earth and open up our hearts when interacting with them.

I understand here as well that our parents when they age, they become like children. They just need our assurance, a listening ear, compassion, companion and support in the present moment.

From my context, just calling, saying hello, remembering funny childhood memories from the past can brighten their day a lot.

I pray for our parents to be blessed with love, health, peace and wellbeing. And I ask Allah to show us the way and path to recognise our parents’ needs.
